New Jersey gym membership cancellation laws

New Jersey gives you until midnight of the third operating day after you receive the contract. You can cancel by phone, online (if you signed up online), mail or in person. Contracts must also allow cancellation for death, permanent disability, or a permanent move of more than 25 miles.

Phone call to the club location where you signed; online (website link, app settings or the club's termination email) if you signed online; regular, registered or certified mail (return receipt requested); or personal delivery to the address in the contract.

Other reasons you can cancel

Disability / death	Death or permanent disability (fully described and confirmed by a physician): you may cancel. The club may keep the value of services used plus up to 10% of the total contract price for expenses. (N.J.S.A. 56:8-42(f))
Moving away	A permanent move more than 25 miles from the club or an affiliated club offering similar services at no extra cost: you may cancel. The club may require proof and keep a prorated share plus up to 10% for expenses. (N.J.S.A. 56:8-42(g))
Other	If you signed up online, the club must let you turn off automatic renewal online through a prominent link or button. (N.J.S.A. 56:8-42(i))
